History

Puntarenas City, Canton of Puntarenas Province

Surrounded in big part by the Gulf of Nicoya, Puntarenas was discovered by Hernán Ponce de León in 1519. This head large district of the Province covers a fast stretch form the tip of the Nicoya peninsula till the beaches to the south of the city Puntuarenas. The different areas lend themselves for nature reserves in the mountains, agriculture in the plains and touristic development along the beaches. The reason why this province is so long and along the coast, is, that in earlier times the only way to get to the center of Costa Rica was by reaching Puntarenas by boat. The only connection to San José was from Puntarenas.

In 1840 the port of Caldera was abandoned and efforts to improve the Port of Puntarenas were intensified. In 1845 the Congress of the Republic declared Puntarenas a duty free Port ( with the exception of Cognac and hard licor).

Also within the terretory lies the Island of Coco, 300 miles off shore from Puntarenas. It is the 10th District of the Canton. This island is a National Park and was declared 'Patrimonio de le Humanidad' by the United Nations. Is offers water in abundance, two small beaches and an many kinds of sharks, that attract lots divers and movie-makers. The island is mountanous and coverd with forests. There are lots of now wild pigs, cats and goats. Ther is an bundance of birds too.

General Description

Puntarenas City, Canton of Puntarenas Province

Situated along the Paficic Coast, the district of Puntarenas streches from the Cordillera de Guanacaste and cerros de Tilarán till the Peninsula of Nicoya at the northeastern end and till Garabito at the southern end. Included are all islands in between like: Chira, San Lucas, Cedros, Tortugas, Venado, Caballo, Bejuco, Berrugate, Jesuita, Gitana Negrito y muchas más.

Puntarenas is one of the Cantones that attract lots tourists. The reason are the large quantity of beautiful beaches and islands. It is also a local tradition to go to places in Puntarenas on weekends and for holidays. Puntarenas is also the starting point for many excursion and the ferries that go to Playa Naranjo, Paquera, Tambor, Cábano and Malpaís. Some islands offer accommodation like Jesusita, Los Muertos or Gitana.
