History

Matina, Canton of Limón Costa Rica

Cacao was the first export crop from Costa Rica. In the 1650´s, Matina was used as an important port for cacao export, so important that Fort San Fernando was built there by the Spanish in 1742. It was declared a foreign port in 1811.

The area is drained by the rivers Matina, Moín and Madre de Dios. Chief products are bananas, cacao, plantain, pejibaye and beef cattle.
