History

Cañas, Canton of Guanacaste Province

Most of the people who live here are descendents of the Corobici Indians. The region corresponding to the canton Cañas was discovered in 1522. The town used to be called Escarbadero, but after Jose Maria Cañas visited it, it was named after him. It was granted the status of ciudad (city or town) n 1912. As the people of Cañas are known for their friendliness and hospitality, their town has been called 'Ciudad de la Amistad' (Friendship Cit)

Economy

The most important economic activities here are agriculture and ranching… sugar cane, rice, beef and on a lesser scale, beans, corn, cantaloupe and watermelon. At Hacienda Tobago, people mill sugar cane and produce gasohol. Fishing is done by the mouth of the Tempisque River in El Nispero Township.

Hydrography and Climate

Its river systems belong to the basins of the Bededero and Abangares rivers. The temperature ranges from 27 to 35 degrees C and there are two seasons - dry and windy between December through April and rainy the rest of the year.

The Tempisque River, one of the most important tributaries of the Gulf of Nicoya, is a most beautiful area with an abundance of fish. The rivers Bebedero and Corobici also pass through Cañas. About 10km after Cañas, you´ll find the restaurant La Pacifica (the cabins are no longer rented out) which also serves as an Ecology Center. Other frequently visited areas include the Magdalena River Dam, the forest reserves of Taboga and Manglado, and the Corobici Hydroelecric Plant.
