Moravia acquired its name and became a canton in 1914. It was named after former President Juan Rafael Mora, but since there was already a canton Mora, the name was modified to Moravia. Mora (President from 1849 to 1859) had rigged his reelection, but was given credit for driving back the US invader, William Walker, who had designs on creating a Confederacy of Southern American States. That event did wonders in creating national unity in Costa Rica and is celebrated each year.
