Around 1700, the town of San Pedro was known as Santiago de la Granadilla (Granadilla is a fruit). The name later changed to Villa de San Pedro del Mojón (mojón means geographical landmark) because it marked the limit between San Pedro and San José. These are now part of the same Metropolitan area. The canton was created in 1915 and given the name in honor of Faustino Montes de Oca, a citizen known for his great community support. The capital city of the cantón Montes de Oca is San Pedro.
