The fastest way to get to Carate is by plane. This place has an airport, with regular flights to San José. Alternatively, if you want you can drive into Puerto Jimenez, from here you need a 4WD vehicule to get to Carate, which is quite a distance away past the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve. When in Carate, you may want to go to the beautiful Playa Madrigal beach, a relatively isolated beach a few kilometers away.
In Carate, you will be surprised with the amount of wildlife, like: Pacific Ridley sea turtles, Leatherback sea turtles, Green sea turtles, and Hawksbill sea turtles, they come ashore here to nest and lay their eggs on the beach. You will also most likely see Ara Macaws, Squirrel Monkeys, and Tapirs in the woods. With some luck you also may see some orca whales arriving in Drake Bay.
This is pure paradise for nature lovers. be prepared for some heavy rains between April and December. There are lots of hiking opportunities around Carate as well as deep sea fishing, or scuba diving near Caño Island.
